What Is Oriens?

The short version

Oriens is a small, independent lab that makes handcrafted mousepads. Every single one is made to order, by hand, using materials sourced exclusively from Italy and Japan. We don't mass produce. We don't stock inventory. When you place an order, we start cutting your mousepad within 24 hours - made specifically for you.

Where the name comes from

Oriens is Latin for "rising" - as in the rising sun, a new beginning, the east. It reflects what we're trying to do: bring something genuinely new to a category that's been dominated by the same factory-produced, logo-stamped products for years. We're not here to make the cheapest mousepad. We're here to make the best one you've ever touched.

What we actually make

Mousepads - but the kind that take thought to build. Every Oriens mousepad is made up of three decisions you make at the time of order:

Surface. We offer premium cloth surfaces, each with a different feel. Some are silk-smooth for fast, effortless glide. Others are more textured for control and precision. All of them are sourced from specialized weavers in Italy or Japan.

Base. You choose between natural rubber, memory foam, or premium cork. Each one changes how the pad sits on your desk and how it feels under your hand over long sessions.

Edge finish. Hand-stitched edges for a clean, reinforced border, or an artisan edgeless design for a completely flat profile. Both are finished by hand.

Sizes range from compact (320×270mm) up to full extended desk mats (700×700mm), with custom dimensions available through the Atelier.

The Atelier - our order system

You won't find a standard "add to cart" button on our site. Orders go through the Atelier, our invitation-only configurator. To access it, you need an access code, which you can request through the Application page.

Once you receive your code, head to the Atelier page and enter it - you have one minute to do so before it expires. After that, you'll have a 12-hour session to configure and place your order. You don't need to keep the tab open; the session is stored locally in your browser.

This system exists because we take on a limited number of orders at a time. It lets us give each one the attention it deserves, rather than scaling up in ways that would compromise quality.

Made in Italy and Japan - what that actually means

These aren't marketing words. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, every Oriens mousepad is assembled using materials from Italian and Japanese suppliers we've personally vetted. Our cloth surfaces come from specialized weavers. Our bases are sourced from manufacturers that meet our standards for consistency and durability.

We invest heavily in our R&D process - most of our time goes into testing materials, refining construction methods, and improving each iteration of our products. The goal is that every version of a surface is better than the one before it.

Quality control

Every pad goes through double inspection before it leaves. We check the surface for defects, verify the edge finish, and confirm the base sits flat. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't ship. In the rare case something arrives damaged, we replace it - no arguments.

The community

We run an active Discord server where most of our community lives. It's where you'll find build photos, material discussions, support, and early access announcements. Once you're selected through the application, Discord is also the main channel we use to send your access code and follow up.

Who's behind Oriens

We're a small team: Primus, Nabeko (Asia Director), and Xero (Developer & Designer). We don't have a warehouse. We don't have a customer service department with 48-hour response queues. When you message us, you're talking to the same people who made your mousepad.
